New Internship: Social Media

Our community engagement coordinator and advocates are looking for some support in regards to social media!

Summary of Internship

A social media intern will be responsible for keeping up to date with domestic and gender-based violence in the news and working with the community engagement coordinator to create/curate regular content on behalf of Walnut Avenue for Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Applicants of all genders, identities, and lived experiences are welcome!

  • Expected time commitment: 5-7 hours/week for minimum 6 months; periodic meetings with supervisor, as mutually agreed upon

  • Service type: 100% remote/virtual

  • Compensation type: unpaid; please see below for additional benefits

  • Eligibility: must meet minimum volunteer program requirements, described here

  • Preferred experience: know how to use Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter; comfortable creating content to be posted on public social media; awareness of general appropriate conduct online

Any training that this person will need to do? Yes. Before beginning their work, the social media intern must complete a virtual training with their supervisor. This training includes basics about domestic violence, Walnut Avenue’s policies on social media use and conduct, and an introduction to the agency’s current online resources. This training may take up to 3 hours, depending on any questions and conversations which arise. (If you are already a certified domestic violence advocate, then this training may be shortened.)

Full Position Description

The Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center (Walnut Avenue) is a strength-based family center. Walnut Avenue provides support and services so that women, children, and families have the opportunities and skills to thrive.

Walnut Avenue offers four core services: the Early Education Center, Family Support Services, Advocacy & Prevention, and Community Engagement. 

Roles of the Social Media Intern

Walnut Avenue is seeking an individual who is interested in serving as an intern and providing support to our community engagement program in creating social media content. Prior experience in interning is not required; familiarity with social media use and content creation, particularly Instagram and including Facebook and Twitter, is. In return, Walnut Avenue will provide an opportunity for an intern to work closely with our community engagement coordinator to learn about domestic and gender-based violence, healthy relationships, and designing social media campaigns for increasing community access to trauma-informed, evidence-based education.

 Expected time commitment:

  • Estimated 5-7 hours/week for minimum 6 months

  • Regular meetings with supervisor are scheduled based on mutual agreement (usually one hour every 1-2 weeks)

Supervised by: Community Engagement Coordinator

Specific Responsibilities

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Staying up to date on domestic and gender-based violence in the news, especially as it concerns current events and legislative changes

  • Creating content related to Walnut Avenue’s areas of service for Walnut Avenue’s Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts

  • If bilingual in Spanish: creating bilingual content (however, being bilingual is not currently a requirement)

  • Some research in variety of topics related to domestic violence and child development to curate social media content

  • Creating content discussing current events and political changes related to domestic violence

  • Have reliable access to a device that will allow the intern to keep up with their other responsibilities

  • Potential for working on special projects, e.g. awareness campaigns, as mutually agreed upon by intern and supervisor

Internship Expectations

  • Attend a volunteer orientation/interview with the community engagement coordinator

  • Complete a 3-hour training before beginning duties

  • Complete 5-7 hours/week of research and/or content development for 6 months (more hours available if desired/requested)

  • Meet every two weeks (or other mutually agreed-upon regular interval) with the community engagement coordinator for supervisory check-in

  • Attend monthly social media team meetings to collaborate with staff

  • Complete and return monthly timesheets and other internship paperwork in a timely manner

  • Be in compliance with Walnut Avenue’s mission, values, and Code of Conduct

  • Complete an exit survey upon completion of volunteer program

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Be 18 or older

  • Strong working knowledge of social media content creation, professional or personal

  • Experience with social media platforms, especially Instagram; Facebook and Twitter are beneficial

  • Strong research abilities

  • Detail-oriented with clear communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Capable of working collaboratively and independently

  • Responsive to constructive feedback from supervisor

  • Bilingual Spanish a benefit but not required

An internship candidate is not required to be participating in any academic or other structured program to participate.
